Vaccinations

Dog Vaccines:
Rabies - Rabies is a virus that can infect any mammal - this includes wildlife, livestock, domestic animals and humans. When an animal is exposed to rabies, it can quickly transmit the disease, even before symptoms begin - which is normally 10 days after exposure. The virus is found in saliva, the brain and spinal tissues. It can be spread by saliva entering the body via a bite, open cut, sore/wound, mouth, nose or eyes.

Canine Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus - This vaccine is part of our core vaccine program, every dog gets this vaccine as a puppy. Puppies that do contract these diseases do not always survive.

Lyme - Lyme is passed via tick bites, ticks are very common in this area and we highly recommend having this vaccine done.

Lepto - This disease is transferred by wildlife that urinate in water and the dogs drink the infected water (ponds, streams, puddles etc.)

Bordetella - Also known as Kennel Cough, is a highly infectious disease that is passed from dog to dog via nose to nose contact, saliva, mucous and aerosol. This is why we highly suggest getting this vaccine if your dog goes to the groomers, dog parks or kennels.
Cat Vaccines:
Rabies - Rabies is a virus that can infect any mammal - this includes wildlife, livestock, domestic animals and humans. When an animal is exposed to rabies, it can quickly transmit the disease, even before symptoms begin - which is normally 10 days after exposure. The virus is found in saliva, the brain and spinal tissues. It can be spread by saliva entering the body via a bite, open cut, sore/wound, mouth, nose or eyes.

Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calici Virus and Panleukopenia - This vaccine is part of our core vaccine program, every cat gets this vaccine when they are babies and as adults.

Leukemia  - Is a viral infection in cats that is passed by nasal secretions and saliva, it is easily passed between cats sharing food/water dishes or cat bites. No medication can eliminate Feline Leukemia, so most treatments are aimed at managing the symptoms and complications as the disease progresses.

Puppies and Kittens

Congratulations on the newest addition to your household. Puppy and kitten hood is an exciting time for pets and their families. It's important to the health of your new little one to have exams, vaccinations and deworming done by your veterinarian at certain intervals throughout your puppy or kittens first months of life. For puppies and kittens we typically do vaccines at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks old, while deworming is done every 2 weeks for 3 treatments to make sure we get the full life cycle of the worms. At these first exams we will go over many things with you from vaccines to spays and neuters. These first exams can be quite overwhelming for people and their pets so please don't hesitate to ask any and all questions.

Parasite Prevention

Internal Parasite - Include roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms and others. Typically we like to deworm puppies and kittens at least 3 times to make sure they are worm free. Adults we like to deworm at least once yearly.

Heartworm -  Is a fatal condition caused by parasitic worms that invade a dog's heart and surrounding blood vessels. It's transferred by mosquitoes from infected dogs to uninfected dogs. Cats can also contract heartworm, but it mainly affects their lungs and heart.

Fleas - Fleas are small, parasitic insects that feed off of warm blooded mammals and birds. Fleas can make  your pets life miserable, scratching and biting at themselves to try to relieve the irritation. Fleas can cause hair-loss, skin irritation and in severe cases anemia. Find out more about Fleas here.

Ticks -  Ticks are a small parasite that attaches itself to any warm-blooded host to receive a blood meal. As they feed, they become engorged (swollen) and detach themselves once they are full. Ticks can transmit a variety of diseases when they feed, such as lyme, ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis. Find out more about Lyme disease here.
Find out if ticks and the diseases they carry are in your area click here.

Wellness Testing

Wellness Exams -  We do a full physical examination from head to toe yearly to make sure your pet is happy and  healthy.  Regular physical examinations by a Veterinarian can help detect health concerns early which can  prevent severe complication later in life.

FIV/FELV Snap Test - Tests for 2 lethal feline diseases, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). Both of these diseases are passed by saliva or nasal secretions.

Heartworm/Lyme Snap Test - Our heartworm tests test for heartworm and 3 tick born diseases, lyme, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis. We heartworm test yearly because Norfolk County and surrounding areas are high risk areas for heartworm and ticks. Heartworm/Lyme testing is done April 15th - June 1st every year.

Bloodwork - Our hospital has an in-house laboratory so that we are able to get same day blood test results to help identify your pets medical condition and determine the proper treatment.  If more advanced screening is needed, we have to ability to send out our samples to our referral lab. We recommend yearly screening when your pet reaches their senior years to make sure that we catch any abnormalities before they can become major  health concerns.
