Hi everyone! This edition will be about heartworm prevention. We have a variety of products available for your pet - each one is unique and fits different lifestyles to best suit your pet! Below I've posted the prevention available, what it protects against and tips for which lifestyle its best suited for.

We do strongly suggest a heartworm test before using the prevention, as heartworm is a deadly condition, and the majority of the products are not licensed for safe use in heartworm positive dogs. Keep in mind, heartworm prevention is given once monthly from June to November.

Oral Medications

Heartgard works great for a pet that leads a life that is low risk for tick and flea contact. It's also beef flavoured, so it's more enticing for your pet to eat.

  • Heartworm
  • Roundworm and hookworm
  • Available for dogs

Trifexis is best suited for an animal that is low risk for tick contact and who is easier to give pills to versus applying a topical (liquid) alternative. This product does need to be given on a full stomach for it to be fully effective.

  • Heartworm
  • Fleas
  • Roundworm, hookworm and whipworm
  • Available for dogs

Topical Medications

Topical heartworm medication is a liquid that is applied directly to the skin; it is not to be given orally. For any of our topicals, we suggest waiting at least 24 hours before bathing your pet or allowing it out for a swim.

Advantage Multi works great for a pet that refuses to eat a pill and is low risk for tick contact.
  • Applied along the neck and back in 3-5 different spots
  • Heartworm
  • Fleas
  • Roundworm and hookworm
  • Available for dogs and cats

Revolution is a great product for a pet that is at risk of flea and tick contact.

  • Applied on the back of the neck in 1 spot
  • Heartworm
  • Fleas
  • Ticks
  • Ear mites
  • Roundworm and hookworm
  • Available for dogs and cats

If you have a major concern in regards to ticks, we have additional products that can be used with heartworm prevention. I will have more on that in a couple of weeks. If you have any questions, or need to pick up your prevention, please give us a call today!
